An 2010 Sony LMD-2451W broadcast monitor was diplaying closed captions in too low of a vertical line position.
It lacks an internal caption decoder so it’s fed by an EEG DE-285 Decoder.
The Sony LMD-2451W monitor adds a black bar at the top and bottom of 16:9 content. I toggled through every menu setting but nothing fixed the black bars.
Finally, I found the reason for the vertical black bars in the manual.
SONY Manual: “The panel of LMD-2451W and LMD-2051W is 16:10 and the panel of LMD-1751W is 15:9. When the 16:9 signal is displayed, black bars appear in the upper and lower positions of the display. This is not a malfunction.”

The Sony LMD-2451W monitor is 16:10. It adds a black bar at the top and bottom of 16:9 content.
The EEG DE-285 Decoder is configured for 16:9—not 16:10. So, the captions’ vertical positions are falling too low because the bottom of the video is elevated up some vertical lines above the black bar at the bottom.
This 2015 Sony Monitor has its own internal caption decoder.
So, why did Sony sell a 16:10 monitor in 2010?
- 16:10 was all the rage from 2005-2008. Then there was a rapid shift to 16:9. Clearance sale?
- 16:10 commonly used for computer displays, gaming, and tablets.
